About Us

Acme Monaco Over Time

  • 1947

Acme Monaco was founded as Acme Spring, Incorporated in 1947 as a manufacturer of custom spring products. During the 1950's, with the help of New Departure-Hyatt, Division of General Motors Corporation, the process for the manufacturing of miniature ball bearing retainer rings was developed and soon became the company's major product line. The business was purchased by John Karabin in 1965 and had been administered by Michael and Roger Karabin since 1983. Currently, Michael Karabin is CEO/COB. Roger Karabin retired January 1, 2008. Succeeding him, Thomas Sebastian held the position as President. Upon Thomas Sebastian’s retirement in 2006, Lucas Karabin and Rebecca Karabin-Ahern became Co-Presidents.

  • 1970 Expansion

The product line was expanded to include orthodontic hardware in 1970. The addition of rolling and wire shaping soon followed allowing us to manufacture our own shaped and straightened and cut wire in house. Monaco Spring, a custom manufacturer of springs, wireforms, and stampings, was purchased in 1971. Non-sterile medical assemblies, such as surgical staples, guidewires, and stylets, were added to the product line in 1983. The two companies were merged in 1984 to form Acme Monaco. Currently, both the orthodontic hardware and medical components are sold only to the original equipment manufacturers and distributors. All parts are custom made to customer's specifications. None of our products are sold directly to the end users, such as doctors or hospitals.

  • 1989 Double Capacity

In 1989 a second manufacturing facility was opened in Presque Isle, Maine. This facility is a mirror image of our New Britain plant, therefore, allowing us to double our capacity on a three-shift basis. During 1996, both facilities were awarded the ISO 9002 Certificate. We were one of the first in our industry to achieve this prestigious designation. In 1998 Acme Monaco received CE Mark approval for its orthodontic wire components and medical assemblies. In June of 2001 Acme Monaco received QS 9000 Certification. In October of 2003 Acme Monaco received TS 16949 Certification. In April of 2005 Acme Monaco received ISO EN 13485 certification. In November of 2007 Acme Monaco received certification to Japan’s MHLW Ministerial Ordinance No. 169. To accommodate our recent growth, Acme Monaco opened a third US manufacturing plant in May of 2006. This facility is also located in Presque Isle, Maine and manufactures medical devices.

  • 2007 Logical Business Approach

In January of 2007 Acme Monaco Asia Pte. Ltd. was registered in Singapore with the official grand opening in June . The Michael Png family of Kian Soon Hardware & Trading Pte. Ltd. and the Michael Karabin family of Acme Monaco have been business partners since 1995. For several years we have discussed the importance of a joint venture to grow our respective businesses. Early in 2006 it was determined that an Asian-based manufacturing facility to mirror Acme Monaco’s three plants in the United States was the most logical business approach to better service the Asian market.
